Newsom Eye’s Co-Management program is built so that surgery with us does not mean leaving the optometrist you already trust. We share the care, and you go back to them.
What co-management means
Newsom Eye has developed a program specifically designed to enhance the relationship between you, your current primary eye care provider (your optometrist), and our practice. That program is called Co-Management.
We work with a select group of optometrists throughout the state who help bring the highest level of patient care to the surgery process. Co-Management involves sharing the care — and the cost — of your pre-operative and post-operative appointments between Newsom Eye and your local eye doctor.
Make sure to let a Newsom Eye staff member or doctor know that you see another provider for your primary eye care. That one sentence is what starts the coordination.

How a co-managed procedure works

Tell us who your doctor is
At scheduling or at your first visit, let us know you see another provider for primary eye care and give us their name.
Your optometrist prepares you
Pre-operative testing and counseling happen with the doctor who already knows your eyes and your history.
Consultation with your surgeon
You meet your Newsom Eye surgeon, review your options and measurements, and settle the surgical plan together.
Surgery at Newsom Eye
Your procedure is performed at one of our three AAAHC-accredited surgery centers, and you go home the same day.
Day-after check
Your first post-operative visit confirms the eye is healing as expected and that your drops are working.
Back to your own doctor
Remaining follow-up visits happen with your optometrist, close to home, with your surgeon available if anything needs attention.

What is co-management?
Co-management means sharing the care — and the cost — of your pre-operative and post-operative appointments between Newsom Eye and your local eye doctor. Your optometrist stays involved in your care rather than handing you off.
Do I have to leave my current eye doctor to have surgery here?
No. That is the whole point of the program. Newsom Eye works with a select group of optometrists throughout Florida who help bring the highest level of care to the surgical process, and your optometrist remains your primary eye care provider.
What should I tell Newsom Eye about my eye doctor?
Let a Newsom Eye staff member or doctor know that you see another provider for your primary eye care, and give us their name. We will coordinate from there.
Who performs the surgery?
Your Newsom Eye surgeon performs the procedure at one of our three AAAHC-accredited surgery centers. Your optometrist handles the pre- and post-operative visits you would normally have with them.
Where do I go for follow-up visits?
That depends on the plan your two doctors agree on. Often the first day-after visit is with Newsom Eye and the later follow-ups are with your own optometrist, closer to home.
Does co-management cost more?
No. Co-management splits the pre- and post-operative portion of the care between the two practices rather than adding to it.
What procedures can be co-managed?
Cataract surgery and premium lens implants, LASIK, EVO ICL, PRK and glaucoma procedures are all commonly co-managed.
I am an optometrist — how do I refer a patient?
Use the OD / MD Portal to refer, or call us and ask for the co-management team. We will make sure your patient comes back to you.
