What Is LASIK?
LASIK is a laser vision correction procedure that reshapes the cornea — the clear front surface of the eye — so light focuses properly on the retina. It corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses and contact lenses.
At Newsom Eye we perform only bladeless, all-laser LASIK. A femtosecond laser creates the protective corneal flap without a blade, and the WaveLight® excimer laser reshapes the cornea underneath. The procedure itself takes only minutes per eye, and most patients are seeing clearly the next day.
LASIK at Newsom Eye can correct:

Am I a Candidate for LASIK?
About 85% of people who want LASIK qualify for it. To be a candidate you should be at least 18 years old, not pregnant, have stable vision with no significant prescription change in the past year, and have a prescription within the correctable range with healthy corneas of adequate thickness.
Roughly 15% of people don't qualify — usually because of medical history, corneal thickness, eye health or the degree of correction needed. If LASIK isn't right for you, that is not the end of the conversation: Newsom Eye also offers EVO ICL and PRK, and many patients who were told "no" elsewhere have excellent options here.

Is laser vision correction the same as LASIK?
LASIK is one of several vision correction options at Newsom Eye. For patients who are not good candidates for LASIK, we offer alternatives including PRK and the EVO Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) that may suit your eyes better.
Who is a good candidate for LASIK?
To qualify for LASIK you must be at least 18 years old, not pregnant, have stable vision with no significant prescription change in the past year, and have a prescription within the correctable range. During your evaluation our doctors perform a series of tests to determine whether LASIK is right for you.
Is LASIK safe?
LASIK is one of the most widely performed elective procedures in the United States today. It is precise and safe enough that the U.S. military and NASA now permit it for pilots and astronauts.
Can both eyes be treated the same day?
Yes. For both LASIK and PRK we treat both eyes on the same day.
Does LASIK hurt?
LASIK is virtually painless. Numbing drops are used, so most patients feel only slight pressure during the procedure. Mild dryness or scratchiness for a day or two afterward is normal.
How soon will I see clearly after LASIK?
Most Newsom Eye patients see 20/20 or better the very next day. Vision continues to sharpen over the following days as the eye heals.
What if I am not a LASIK candidate?
Roughly 15% of people do not qualify for LASIK because of medical history, eye health, corneal thickness or the degree of correction needed. Newsom Eye offers the EVO Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) and PRK, which often work well for patients with high prescriptions or thinner corneas.
Do I need to stop wearing contact lenses before my exam?
Yes. Contact lenses reshape the cornea, so they must be left out before your evaluation for accurate measurements. Our staff will tell you exactly how long based on the type of lenses you wear.
