HOW DOES THE RETINA FUNCTION?

The retina is the thin layer of tissue which lines the back of the eye. The retina functions like the film in a camera; capturing light and processing that light into information that our brains piece together into the images that we see. The macula is the most specialized part of the retina and home to the sensitive photoreceptors that give us our ability to focus on fine details.

There are two types of photoreceptor cells, rods and cones. Without proper use of these photoreceptor cells it can become difficult to do even some of the simplest tasks, such as reading, driving, or even watching television. Retinal health is one of the most important factors affecting eyesight today.

Our retinal specialists have said many patients complain about objects floating through their field of vision or of sudden lightning like flashes of light. Most of these problems are common and minor, but if left untreated can lead to major problems such as retinal tearing or even retinal detachment. There are a number of ailments that can attack the retina and cause loss of eyesight and even blindness. Contact your Tampa retina or Sebring Newsom Eye Specialist today to schedule a thorough eye exam and let our retinal specialists help take care of the eyes that take care of you.
