What to expect at a Newsom Eye surgery center
Most eye procedures take 10 to 20 minutes. Plan on being at the center about two to three hours from check-in to discharge.
Before your date
A preoperative visit with measurements and testing, plus a Financial Advance Notice form estimating what your insurance will pay and what you would owe.
Arrange your ride
You will be sedated and your eye will be dilated, so someone must drive you home. We cannot proceed without a ride arranged.
Check in
Bring your insurance card, photo ID and medication list. Follow the fasting instructions your surgical coordinator gave you.
Preparation
Dilating and anesthetic drops, then light sedation. Most eye surgery is done with drops rather than an injection or general anesthesia.
The procedure
Usually 10 to 20 minutes with your Newsom Eye surgeon and a team that performs eye surgery every day.
Recovery and home
A short stay in recovery, discharge instructions and drops, then home the same day. Your first follow-up is usually the next morning.

Where does Newsom Eye perform surgery?

An ambulatory surgery center is purpose-built for outpatient procedures. For eye surgery that means shorter waits, a team that does nothing but eye cases all day, equipment calibrated for ophthalmic work, and going home the same day.
Will I be asleep during surgery?
Most eye procedures are done with anesthetic eye drops and light sedation rather than general anesthesia. You are relaxed and comfortable but not under. Your surgeon and the anesthesia team will go over your plan beforehand.
How long does eye surgery take?
The procedure itself is usually 10 to 20 minutes. Plan on being at the center for roughly two to three hours in total, counting check-in, preparation and recovery.
Can I drive myself home?
No. You will be sedated and your eye will be dilated, so you must arrange for someone to drive you home. We cannot proceed without a ride arranged.
