RxSight® Light Adjustable Lens · Tampa Bay

The cataract lens you can fine-tune after surgery.

Most lenses lock your vision in before surgery. The Light Adjustable Lens lets you preview and adjust it after — until it's right for the way you live.

What is the Light Adjustable Lens?

The RxSight Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the only FDA-approved intraocular lens that can be adjusted after cataract surgery. It's made of a photosensitive material your surgeon reshapes with non-invasive UV light, so your final prescription is tuned to your eyes and lifestyle once they've healed — not estimated beforehand.

How it works

Implant. Adjust with light. Lock it in.

The Light Adjustable Lens turns cataract surgery into a two-part process — and the second part puts you in control. Tap a step to follow the path.

STEP 01

Implant

During standard cataract surgery, your cloudy natural lens is replaced with the photosensitive Light Adjustable Lens.

STEP 02

Adjust with light

About three weeks later, an in-office Light Delivery Device uses UV light to reshape the lens. You live with each result, then refine it — up to three times.

STEP 03

Lock it in

Once your vision is right, two quick lock-in treatments make it permanent. The lens won't cloud or wear out — this is how you'll see.

Why consider the LAL

Standard lens vs. Light Adjustable Lens

With a standard lens, your prescription is set by measurements taken before surgery — and every eye heals a little differently. The LAL closes that gap.

Day of surgery

Lens implanted

The LAL is placed during your cataract procedure. You'll begin wearing RxSight UV-protective glasses right away to shield the lens.

~3 weeks later

First light treatment

Your eye has healed. A painless, few-minute UV treatment in the office shifts your lens toward your target vision.

Following weeks

Preview & refine

You live with each adjustment, then return to fine-tune — up to three times — until your vision fits your day-to-day.

Final visits

Lock in

Two lock-in treatments seal your result. About 24 hours later, the protective glasses come off for good.

Questions, answered

Light Adjustable Lens FAQs

The LAL is implanted during standard cataract surgery. About three weeks later, your doctor uses an in-office Light Delivery Device to apply UV light treatments that change the lens shape and power. You preview each result in daily life, then return for lock-in treatments that make your vision permanent.

Most patients have up to three light adjustments followed by two lock-in treatments. Each visit takes only a few minutes and is painless. The exact number depends on how much fine-tuning your vision goals require.

Cataract surgery itself, including the surgeon's fee, is typically covered by insurance and Medicare. The Light Adjustable Lens is an elective premium upgrade and is usually not covered. We offer financing and will walk you through your specific costs at your consultation.

The lens responds to UV light — that's how it's adjusted. Until your vision is locked in, everyday UV exposure could change it unintentionally. You'll wear RxSight UV-protective glasses during waking hours until about 24 hours after your final lock-in treatment to keep your results stable.

No. The light treatments are non-invasive and take only a few minutes in the office. Most patients describe them as similar to a routine eye exam, with no discomfort.

Dr. T. Hunter Newsom has been an FDA principal investigator for the Light Adjustable Lens since 2012 and presented LAL patient outcomes at the University of Iowa in 2015. That depth of experience with this specific technology is rare, and it's available across all of our Tampa Bay locations.
