Start the year off right by taking care of your eyes in the office!

A lot of patients who spend time in front of computers for work often ask us if there is anything they can do to lessen the daily strain on their eyes. Here is what we tell them:
There is no evidence that working on a computer can damage one’s eyes. It can however cause eye fatigue if you spend several hours sitting at the desk without taking a break. Not only will it cause eye fatigue, but spending hours at a time working at your computer station can also cause neck and back pain. It’s a good idea to follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look away at something 20 feet or further for 20 seconds or longer. It’s also a good idea to get up and take a break every hour or so.
If you’re over 40, and having issues seeing the computer screen, you might be experiencing presbyopia. It’s a common condition that affects everyone at some point. Presbyopia is caused by the loss of flexibility of the eyes natural lens. This results in holding objects further away to read, and eventually resulting in the need for reading glasses or bifocals. Doctors can also perform laser vision correction or lens replacement procedures that can treat presbyopia, resulting in little to no dependency on glasses or bifocals.
