Q: What is Laser Cataract Surgery?

Q&A With Dr. Iskander on Laser Cataract Surgery

Q: I’m 68 and have been told by my primary care physician (PCP) that I have cataracts. I’ve heard a lot about laser cataract surgery, what exactly is that?

A: Being diagnosed with cataracts can be scary, but the majority of us will eventually develop them as time goes on. According to the National Eye Institute, by age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. However, there is some great news for patients recently diagnosed with cataracts. Cataract surgery has advanced greatly over the last few decades and has never been safer, more precise and had such a quick recovery time. Now, the procedure is performed in an outpatient setting, takes only about 10 minutes to perform, and in most cases, surgery doesn’t require sutures. There is also an assortment of premium lenses that can further enhance your vision. These lenses can reduce or eliminate the need for reading glasses or bifocals after undergoing cataract surgery.

Laser Cataract Surgery is the latest advancement in cataract removal and uses advanced femtosecond technology. During Laser Cataract Surgery, I can use a laser to perform many of the same steps of traditional cataract surgery that would have been performed using a blade. This laser technology has added a greater amount of precision, safety and improved visual outcomes to the entire cataract procedure. It allows the surgeon to perform cataract surgery with more ease, convenience, and speed than with traditional methods.

At San Antonio Eye Specialists, I am proud to offer our patients the LENSAR™ Laser System. I was the first surgeon in Texas to be certified on this laser platform and it’s added a whole new level of precision to cataract surgery for our patients. This system reconstructs a sophisticated 3-D model of the true anatomy of the eye, which creates a customized treatment plan for each patient. It also allows for a more centrally placed intraocular lens, which can add a better visual result, especially for premium IOL patients who wish to reduce or eliminate their need for glasses after cataract removal.
